Opus one cab11/1/2022 ![]() Current vintages have shown really great improvements and I look forward to trying them in 10+ years. Its overpriced by about about 20-30% when its done well. Leoville las cases is less and depending on vintage can be great to uninteresting. Pichon longueville I believe is about the same price, probable less. Lynch bages jumpes to mind although I believe it is less I will take it over opus vintage to vintage. Im not current on bordeaux pricing but I believe the wines below should be close. Opus is palyaing catch up in quality because they did such a good job with marketing, branding and distribution. quilceca creek, same price, much more interesting wine insignia caymus Special select I can go on and on from the new world, from big names to tiny producers. Foley claret 80.00 dunn, both howell and napa are cheaper and year to year are better than opus. Wines that I feel over deliver compared to opus from the new world. ![]() Do do it with opus would be a bit unfair as opus would lose much more often then not. With that being said I have to echo the rest and say that It would do us much more justice to find a better, california cabernet or meritage and then make the comparison. opus as of late has made some solid changes and the wines are slowly coming into their own. If I were you, and wanted to do a side-by-side blind, I'd find a vintage that's considered earl-drinking for both regions, and just pick a good Chateau that released at a similar price to Opus that vintage (i.e., 2006 Opus Vs 2006 Leoville Las Cases or Ducru, or Lynch Bages). So a wine that may be the same price as Opus One in 2004, is twice as much in 2005. Further, Bordeaux prices vary wildly from vintage to vintage. ![]() Now, as for Bordeaux, I think someone else mentioned the irony in Opus One being touted as overrated, since big Bordeaux names are pretty much the same thing. ![]() #Opus one cab skin#During fermentation and maceration, component lots received an average of 20 days of skin contact prior to 19 months of barrel aging in new French oak. They may not be total killers, but are definitely better for the money, IMO The 2007 Opus One is composed of 79 Cabernet Sauvignon, 8 Merlot, 6 Cabernet Franc, 6 Petit Verdot, and 1 Malbec. However, I'll throw out a few, at different price points, that are more readily available. My favorite domestic "Opus One Killers" are really small producers that are only available winery direct (Lewelling, Stefania, Ilsley, Match, Robinson Family), and are really inexpensive. I know it isn't your OP, but it seems like you're asking around now, so I'll give my two cents on each. ![]()
